भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच संक्षिप्त लेकिन तीव्र संघर्ष की समाप्ति के लगभग तीन सप्ताह बाद, विदेश मंत्री एस जयशंकर ने भविष्य में आतंकवादी उकसावे के खिलाफ कड़ी चेतावनी जारी की है। उन्होंने दोहराया है कि भारत स्थान की परवाह किए बिना जवाबी हमला करने में संकोच नहीं करेगा। यूरोपीय संघ के साथ उच्च स्तरीय व्यापार वार्ता के लिए ब्रुसेल्स की अपनी आधिकारिक यात्रा के दौरान पोलिटिको के साथ एक साक्षात्कार में जयशंकर ने कहा, “यदि वे पाकिस्तान में बहुत अंदर हैं, तो हम पाकिस्तान में बहुत अंदर तक जाएंगे।” यह टिप्पणी हाल के महीनों में सीमा पार आतंकवाद पर भारत सरकार के सबसे कड़े रुख में से एक को दर्शाती है।

जयशंकर ने पोलिटिको से कहा कि यह [पाकिस्तान] एक ऐसा देश है जो आतंकवाद को राज्य की नीति के साधन के रूप में इस्तेमाल करने में बहुत डूबा हुआ है। यही पूरा मुद्दा है। जब उनसे पूछा गया कि क्या पिछले महीने की शत्रुता को भड़काने वाली परिस्थितियाँ अभी भी मौजूद हैं, तो उन्होंने कहा, “यदि आप आतंकवाद के प्रति प्रतिबद्धता को तनाव का स्रोत कहते हैं, तो निश्चित रूप से, यह है।” मई की शुरुआत में भारत प्रशासित क्षेत्र में एक घातक आतंकवादी हमले के बाद संघर्ष शुरू हुआ, जिसमें 26 नागरिकों, मुख्य रूप से हिंदुओं की जान चली गई। 

भारत ने हमले को प्रायोजित करने के लिए पाकिस्तान को दोषी ठहराया, इस आरोप से इस्लामाबाद ने इनकार किया है। इस संघर्ष में दो परमाणु-सशस्त्र पड़ोसियों के बीच कई दिनों तक मिसाइलों का आदान-प्रदान और हवाई हमले हुए, जिसका समापन 10 मई को घोषित युद्धविराम में हुआ। दोनों देशों ने जीत का दावा किया, लेकिन घटनाओं के बारे में उनके अलग-अलग संस्करण थे। भारत ने शुरू में पाकिस्तान के कई भारतीय लड़ाकू विमानों को मार गिराने के दावों को खारिज कर दिया। हालांकि, बाद में एक वरिष्ठ भारतीय सैन्य अधिकारी ने बिना कोई विशेष विवरण दिए विमान के नुकसान की बात स्वीकार की।
