अन्नामलाई युवा हैं, अच्छा बोलते हैं। अन्नामलाई को लोग बोलते सुनना देखना पसंद करते हैं। आईपीएस अधिकारी रह चुके हैं, कोई दाग नहीं है। सिंघम के नाम से फेमस भी हैं। नरेंद्र मोदी उन्हें बेहद पसंद भी करते हैं। पीएम मोदी के हाल के दस सालों में जितने भी तेज तर्रार अधिकारी रहें हैं उन्हें मौका दिया है। उदाहऱण में आपको आरके सिंह, एस जयशंकर से लेकर राजेश्वर सिंह, असीम अरूण तक कई नाम मिल जाएंगे।
भाजपा की तमिलनाडु इकाई की कमान नैनार नागेन्द्रन के हाथों में होने और एआईएडीएमके के साथ गठबंधन के बाद निवर्तमान राज्य भाजपा प्रमुख के अन्नामलाई के राष्ट्रीय भूमिका संभालने की संभावना प्रबल है। वहीं अन्नामलाई को लेकर एक बड़ी खब सामने आ रही है कि जिस तरीके से अब तक खबरें चल रही थी कि उन्हें बीजेपी का राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष बनाया जा सकता है। लेकिन इन सारी अटकलों पर अब विराम लगता जा रहा है। बीजेपी का अगला राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष कौन होगा ये सवाल बार बार उठाया जा रहा है। तमता तरह की खबरें भी सामने आ रही हैं, लेकिन सटीक जवाब किसी के पास नहीं है। कोई कह रहा है कि आरएसएस की पसंद का होगा, कोई कह रहा है कि मोदी-शाह की पसंद का होगा। कोई कह रहा है कि दक्षिण से किसी चेहरे को तरजीह मिलेगी तो कोई महिला अध्यक्ष का दावा भी कर रहा है।
लेकिन अन्नामलाई इस रेस में सबसे आगे बढ़ते नजर आ रहे थे। नरेंद्र मोदी का इससे ज्यादा खास कोई और भला कौन हो सकता है जो सिर्फ राजनीति ही उनके लिए कर रहा है। जिसे किसी दूसरे नंबर के नेता से भी कोई मतलब नहीं है। जिस दिन अमित शाह ने ये ऐलान किया कि एआईएडीएमके के साथ गठबंधन करने जा रहे हैं, अन्नामलाई ने उस दिन भी ये बात कही थी कि वो राजनीति में नरेंद्र मोदी के फेस को देखकर आए थे। इसका मतलब है वो ये कहना चाहते हैं कि उनकी जवाबदेही मोदी जी के प्रति है। बीजेपी इस बार दक्षिण भारत से अध्यक्ष बनाए जाने को लेकर चर्चा जोरों से हैं। तेजस्वी सूर्या को अन्नामलाई से रिप्लेस किया जाएगा। इस वक्त अन्नामलाई को लेकर चर्चा चल रही है कि उन्हें भारतीय जनता युवा मोर्चा का अध्यक्ष बनाया जा सकता है।

अन्नामलाई को अक्सर ऐसे राज्य में भाजपा की उपस्थिति बढ़ाने का श्रेय दिया जाता है, जहां इसने अब तक बहुत कम प्रगति की है। भले ही तमिलनाडु में भाजपा का वोट शेयर 2019 के लोकसभा चुनावों में 3% से बढ़कर पिछले साल के चुनावों में 11% से अधिक हो गया। एआईएडीएमके के साथ गठबंधन असंभव लग रहा था क्योंकि आईपीएस अधिकारी से राजनेता बने अन्नामलाई भाजपा के अकेले चुनाव लड़ने के प्रबल समर्थक थे। वह इस बात पर अड़े रहे हैं कि भाजपा अकेले चुनाव लड़े। लेकिन पार्टी को एहसास हुआ कि यह कदम अगले 10-15 वर्षों के लिए फायदेमंद नहीं होगा। बीजेपी के अंदरूनी सूत्रों की मानें तो तमिलनाडु के पूर्व भाजपा प्रमुख दक्षिण में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाएंगे, जब तक कि केंद्रीय नेतृत्व उन्हें “पार्टी या शासन के भीतर” भूमिका नहीं देता। एक वरिष्ठ भाजपा नेता ने दावा किया कि तमिलनाडु में अन्नामलाई की संभावनाएं “सीमित” हैं क्योंकि वह और अन्नाद्रमुक प्रमुख एडप्पादी के पलानीस्वामी गौंडर जाति से आते हैं।
