तमिलनाडु के वन मंत्री और वरिष्ठ डीएमके नेता के पोनमुडी एक सार्वजनिक कार्यक्रम में अपने भाषण के कारण विवादों में आ गए, जिसमें उन्होंने हिंदू धार्मिक पहचान को यौन स्थितियों से जोड़ने वाली टिप्पणी की। कार्यक्रम के एक वायरल वीडियो में पोनमुडी को यह कहते हुए सुना जा सकता है, महिलाओं, कृपया गलत न समझें। वो एक चुटकुला सुनाते हैं जिसमें एक आदमी एक सेक्स वर्कर से मिलने जाता है, जो फिर उस आदमी से पूछती है कि वह शैव है या वैष्णव। जब आदमी को समझ में नहीं आता, तो वह यह पूछकर स्पष्ट करती है कि क्या वह पट्टई (क्षैतिज तिलक, जो शैव धर्म से जुड़ा है) या नामम (लंबवत तिलक, जो वैष्णव धर्म से जुड़ा है) पहनता है। फिर वह समझाती है कि अगर वह शैव है, तो स्थिति लेटी हुई है। और अगर वैष्णव है, तो स्थिति खड़े होकर है।
डीएमके सांसद कनिमोझी ने पोनमुडी के बयान की निंदा की। एक्स पर एक पोस्ट में उन्होंने लिखा मंत्री पोनमुडी का हालिया भाषण अस्वीकार्य है। भाषण का कारण चाहे जो भी हो, ऐसी अभद्र टिप्पणी निंदनीय है। तमिलनाडु भाजपा प्रमुख के अन्नामलाई ने मंत्री पोनमुडी की विवादास्पद टिप्पणी को लेकर डीएमके की आलोचना की और इसे पार्टी के राजनीतिक विमर्श का मानक बताया। अन्नामलाई ने लिखा केवल यह मंत्री ही नहीं, डीएमके का पूरा तंत्र अश्लील, अपशब्द बोलने वाला और असभ्य है। ऐसे अपमानजनक समूह का नेतृत्व करने के लिए शर्म से सिर झुकाओ स्टालिन।
