कन्नड़ अभिनेत्री रान्या राव की मां ने कर्नाटक उच्च न्यायालय में बंदी प्रत्यक्षीकरण याचिका दायर की है, जिसमें सोने की तस्करी के मामले में अपनी बेटी की हिरासत की वैधता को चुनौती दी गई है। रान्या राव को 20 मई को आर्थिक अपराधों के लिए विशेष न्यायालय द्वारा जमानत दी गई थी, लेकिन विदेशी मुद्रा संरक्षण और तस्करी गतिविधियों की रोकथाम अधिनियम, 1974 (कोफेपोसा) के तहत दायर एक अलग मामले के कारण वह हिरासत में ही रहेंगी। रान्या राव को दुबई से 14.8 किलोग्राम सोने की तस्करी करने के आरोप में 3 मार्च को बेंगलुरु एयरपोर्ट पर गिरफ्तार किया गया था। विस्तृत व्यक्तिगत तलाशी में कथित तौर पर उसकी कमर और पिंडलियों के चारों ओर पट्टियों और टिश्यू का उपयोग करके सोने की छड़ें छिपाई गई थीं। उसके जूतों और सामने की जेबों में अतिरिक्त सोने की छड़ें और कटे हुए टुकड़े भी मिले। जब्त किया गया सोना 24 कैरेट शुद्धता का बताया जा रहा है, जिसकी कीमत 12.56 करोड़ रुपये से अधिक है। राव पर सीमा शुल्क अधिनियम और तस्करी गतिविधि रोकथाम अधिनियम के तहत मामला दर्ज किया गया है।

इस बीच, कोफेपोसा आरोपों के कारण, राव को निवारक हिरासत में रखा गया है, क्योंकि यह कानून अधिकारियों को तस्करी या विदेशी मुद्रा के संरक्षण के लिए हानिकारक गतिविधियों में शामिल होने के संदेह वाले व्यक्तियों को हिरासत में लेने का अधिकार देता है।
