26 नवंबर 2008 की रात को जब मुंबई समन्वित आतंकवादी हमलों से अराजकता में डूबा हुआ था, सदानंद दाते मुंबई के मध्य क्षेत्र के अतिरिक्त पुलिस आयुक्त के रूप में कार्यरत थे। हालाँकि हमलों ने मुख्य रूप से दक्षिणी क्षेत्र को निशाना बनाया, लेकिन दाते ने कोई समय बर्बाद नहीं किया। मालाबार हिल में अपने निवास से वह सीएसटी स्टेशन की ओर भागे। रास्ते में, वह एक पुलिस स्टेशन पर रुके, खुद को कार्बाइन से लैस किया और अपने साथ छह अधिकारियों को ले गए। सीएसटी पहुँचने पर दाते को सूचित किया गया कि दो आतंकवादी – जिन्हें बाद में अजमल कसाब और अबू इस्माइल के रूप में पहचाना गया कामा और अल्बलेस अस्पताल में घुस गए थे। बंधक स्थिति की आशंका से दाते तुरंत अस्पताल की ओर बढ़ गए। छत से आतंकवादी अंधाधुंध गोलीबारी कर रहे थे। दाते ने जवाबी फायरिंग की, लेकिन ऊंचाई के कारण आतंकवादियों को निशाना बनाना मुश्किल था।
आतंकवादियों ने पुलिस टीम पर हैंड ग्रेनेड से हमला किया। इसके टुकड़े सदानंद दाते के हाथ और पैर भी लगे। दाते ने अपनी टीम के साथ हार नहीं मानी और लगातार आतंकवादियों से लोहा लेते रहे। हमले के बाद उन्होंने वह तमाम वायरलेस मैसेज भी सुने, जो आतंकवादियों ने पाकिस्तान में बैठे अपने आकाओं को दिए थे। अधिसूचना में कहा गया है, राष्ट्रीय अन्वेषण अभिकरण अधिनियम, 2008 (2008 का 34) की धारा 15 की उप-धारा (1) द्वारा प्रदत्त शक्तियों के साथ भारतीय नागरिक सुरक्षा संहिता, 2023 (बीएनएसएस) की धारा 18 की उप-धारा (8) के तहत केंद्र सरकार अधिवक्ता नरेंद्र मान को विशेष लोक अभियोजक नियुक्त करती है। उनकी नियुक्ति इस अधिसूचना के प्रकाशन की तारीख से तीन साल की अवधि के लिए या उक्त मामले की सुनवाई पूरी होने तक, जो भी पहले हो, होगी।
