डी गुकेश विश्व चैंपियन बनने के बाद शुक्रवार से यहां शुरू हो रहे टाटा स्टील शतरंज टूर्नामेंट में हिस्सा लेंगे। दिसंबर में सिंगापुर में विश्व चैंपियनशिप जीतने के बाद गुकेश ने न्यूयॉर्क में विश्व रैपिड और ब्लिट्ज टूर्नामेंट से नाम वापस ले लिया था। इसके बाद वह पहली बार किसी टूर्नामेंट में शिरकत करेंगे।

दिसंबर में सिंगापुर में विश्व चैंपियनशिप जीतने के बाद गुकेश ने न्यूयॉर्क में विश्व रैपिड और ब्लिट्ज टूर्नामेंट से नाम वापस ले लिया था। इसके बाद वह पहली बार किसी टूर्नामेंट में शिरकत करेंगे। वह शनिवार को अपना अभियान शुरू करेंगे।

शुक्रवार को उद्घाटन समारोह में जोड़ियों की घोषणा की जाएगी। पांच भारतीय पहली बार ‘शतरंज का विंबलडन’ कहे जाने वाले टूर्नामेंट में हिस्सा ले रहे हैं। यह दुनिया में सबसे लंबे समय तक चलने वाली प्रतियोगिताओं में से एक है जो 1938 से खेली जा रही है।
दुनिया के चौथे नंबर के खिलाड़ी अर्जुन एरिगैसी 2024 में अपने शानदार प्रदर्शन के दम पर इस प्रतियोगिता में सबसे ज्यादा रेटिंग वाले भारतीय खिलाड़ी के रूप में शुरुआत करेंगे।

इस दौरान वह विश्वनाथन आनंद के बाद 2800 ईएलओ रेटिंग पार करने वाले दूसरे भारतीय बन गए थे।
14 खिलाड़ियों और 13 दौर की इस प्रतियोगिता में आर प्रज्ञानानंदा भी दौड़ में होंगे। प्रज्ञानानंदा के दुनिया के युवा खिलाड़ियों में शायद सबसे ज्यादा प्रशंसक हैं।
विदित गुजराती को इस प्रतियोगिता से हटना पड़ा और आयोजकों ने उनकी जगह पी हरिकृष्णा को चुना। पांचवें भारतीय लियोन ल्यूक मेंडोंका हैं जिन्हें चैलेंजर्स वर्ग के पिछले चरण में जीत के बाद एलीट शतरंज में अपना पहला बड़ा ब्रेक मिला है।

विश्व की शीर्ष रेटिंग पर काबिज नार्वे के मैग्नस कार्लसन एक बार फिर इस टूर्नामेंट में एक बार फिर भाग नहीं लेंगे जिनकी शादी को अभी दो सप्ताह भी नहीं हुए हैं।
इसी तरह अमेरिका के तीसरी रैंकिंग के हिकारू नाकामुरा भी इस टूर्नामेंट में भाग नहीं लेंगे।
अमेरिका के फैबियानो कारुआना शीर्ष वरीयता प्राप्त खिलाड़ी के रूप में शुरुआत करेंगे जिसमें उज्बेकिस्तान के नोडिरबेक अब्दुसत्तोरोव और चीन के गत विजेता वेई यी भी भाग लेंगे।
गुकेश ने 2024 में इस प्रतियोगिता को लगभग जीत ही लिया था लेकिन वह चीनी खिलाड़ी के खिलाफ टाईब्रेकर में हार गए।
