हरियाणा की रहने वाली यूट्यूबर ज्योति मल्होत्रा को पूरी तरह से पता था कि वह जिन पाकिस्तानी अधिकारियों के संपर्क में थी, वे पाकिस्तान की कुख्यात जासूसी एजेंसी इंटर-सर्विसेज इंटेलिजेंस (ISI) से जुड़े थे, लेकिन उसने कोई डर या झिझक नहीं दिखाई। यह खुलासा हरियाणा पुलिस द्वारा पाकिस्तान के लिए जासूसी करने के आरोप में उसकी गिरफ्तारी के बाद उसके डिजिटल उपकरणों की फोरेंसिक जांच के दौरान हुआ। जांच से पता चला है कि 33 वर्षीय मल्होत्रा का चार पाकिस्तानी खुफिया एजेंटों के साथ सीधा संवाद था। इनमें दानिश नामक व्यक्ति शामिल है, जिससे वह कथित तौर पर दिल्ली में पाकिस्तान उच्चायोग की यात्रा के दौरान मिली थी, साथ ही अहसान और शाहिद भी थे। जांचकर्ता वर्तमान में पाकिस्तानी सुरक्षा प्रतिष्ठान में इन व्यक्तियों की विशिष्ट भूमिकाओं और पदों की पुष्टि करने के लिए काम कर रहे हैं।
पुलिस ने पहले मल्होत्रा का फोन और लैपटॉप जब्त कर लिया था। जबकि कई फाइलें और संदेश हटा दिए गए थे, फोरेंसिक विशेषज्ञ 12 टेराबाइट डेटा को पुनः प्राप्त करने में कामयाब रहे। प्रारंभिक विश्लेषण से संकेत मिलता है कि मल्होत्रा को पूरी तरह से पता था कि वह आईएसआई के गुर्गों से बात कर रही थी और उसने इसके बावजूद संबंध बनाए रखने का फैसला किया। मल्होत्रा चार लाख से अधिक सब्सक्राबर्स के साथ एक ट्रैवल व्लॉगिंग चैनल चलाती हैं, पर भारत की एकता, संप्रभुता और अखंडता के लिए खतरा मानी जाने वाली गतिविधियों के लिए आधिकारिक गोपनीयता अधिनियम और भारतीय न्याय संहिता की संबंधित धाराओं के तहत मामला दर्ज किया गया है। जांचकर्ताओं का कहना है कि अधिक सबूतों की जांच के बाद आगे के आरोप भी दर्ज किए जा सकते हैं।
उनकी फिजूलखर्ची वाली जीवनशैली ने पहले ही खतरे की घंटी बजा दी थी, क्योंकि उनके खर्च करने के तरीके उनकी घोषित आय से कहीं ज़्यादा थे। अधिकारियों को विदेशी फंडिंग की संलिप्तता का संदेह है, और हरियाणा पुलिस से उम्मीद है कि वे पैसे के स्रोत का पता लगाने में मदद के लिए केंद्रीय एजेंसियों से संपर्क करेगी। मल्होत्रा को 15 मई को गिरफ़्तार किया गया था, जब भारत ने 22 अप्रैल को पहलगाम में हुए आतंकी हमले के जवाब में पाकिस्तान और पाकिस्तान के कब्जे वाले कश्मीर में जवाबी हवाई हमले शुरू किए थे, जिसमें 26 लोगों की जान चली गई थी। पाकिस्तान और चीन की उनकी हालिया यात्राओं, हाई-प्रोफाइल कार्यक्रमों में उपस्थिति और विलासिता के प्रदर्शन के कारण वे जांच के दायरे में आ गई थीं।
