मुख्य न्यायाधीश के कार्यालय पर रमना के मार्गदर्शन का हवाला देते हुए गवई ने कहा कि सीजेआई की भूमिका संस्था के लिए दीर्घकालिक दृष्टिकोण की मांग करती है।
13 मई को भारत के 51वें मुख्य न्यायाधीश के रूप में कार्यभार संभालने वाले न्यायमूर्ति बीआर गवई ने न्यायिक अलगाव की परंपरा को तोड़ने और जनता से सीधे जुड़ने के लिए पूर्व मुख्य न्यायाधीश एनवी रमना की प्रशंसा की। उन्हें लोगों का मुख्य न्यायाधीश कहते हुए गवई ने कहा कि रमना इस भूमिका में दीर्घकालिक संस्थागत दृष्टिकोण लेकर आए। नई दिल्ली में न्यायमूर्ति रमना की पुस्तक नैरेटिव्स ऑफ द बेंच: ए जज स्पीक्स के विमोचन के अवसर पर बोलते हुए, नामित मुख्य न्यायाधीश ने कहा कि मुझे लगता है कि वह भारत के पहले मुख्य न्यायाधीशों में से एक होंगे जिन्होंने न्यायाधीशों के जनता से अलग-थलग रहने की बर्फ को तोड़ा है।
मुख्य न्यायाधीश के कार्यालय पर रमना के मार्गदर्शन का हवाला देते हुए गवई ने कहा कि सीजेआई की भूमिका संस्था के लिए दीर्घकालिक दृष्टिकोण की मांग करती है। सीजेआई के कर्तव्य केवल सर्वोच्च न्यायालय तक सीमित नहीं हैं, बल्कि पूरे देश में संपूर्ण न्यायिक प्रणाली तक फैले हुए हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि मैं न्यायमूर्ति रमना को आश्वस्त करता हूं कि मैं उनके ज्ञान और मार्गदर्शन के शब्दों का पालन करने की कोशिश करूंगा।
न्यायमूर्ति गवई ने अपने कार्यकाल के दौरान न्यायपालिका को अधिक समावेशी बनाने के लिए रमण के प्रयासों पर भी प्रकाश डाला। उनके कार्यकाल के दौरान सुप्रीम कोर्ट में नियुक्त नौ न्यायाधीशों में अनुसूचित जाति और ओबीसी समुदायों के व्यक्ति थे। पहली बार, एक तिहाई प्रतिनिधित्व महिलाओं को दिया गया, जिसमें तीन महिला न्यायाधीशों ने एक साथ शपथ ली। 2019 में अपनी पहली मुलाकात को याद करते हुए, गवई ने एक हल्का-फुल्का पल साझा करते हुए कहा कि उन्होंने एक बार हाई कोर्ट में रहते हुए सुप्रीम कोर्ट के जजों से सुरक्षित दूरी बनाए रखी थी, क्योंकि उन्हें डर था कि ऐसी बातचीत ‘जोखिम भरी’ हो सकती है। उन्होंने कहा कि वह, जस्टिस रमना और जस्टिस सूर्यकांत की जड़ें एक जैसी हैं – सभी कृषि परिवारों से हैं, सभी पहली पीढ़ी के वकील हैं और सभी की पृष्ठभूमि कानूनी है।
